As a child I dabbled in musical theatre it was fun to be a kid to dance and sing on stage. Although, I'm seeing how being a kid gives you a bit more of le-way from adults... You didn't hit that note, awww it's ok...you are too cute..... don't worry kiddo that you didn't get dance step...you will next time.
Now flash forward 10 years, you aren't a kid anymore...and you are competing with the best of the best in your city...
Let me give you an insight into the world of musical auditions....
Musical Audition #1
Preparation: Monologue and Musical Song
I arrive at the studio and I am greeted by the producer and director of the musical. They ask me a couple of questions and hand me a couple of sheets for a cold read. It's old english...Shakespeare style. I get about 5 minutes to review the sides before they call me in.
First I do my monologue for them that I had prepared from home. I can tell that they like it. She asks me to do it again, this time moving around the room and pretending that I am a child talking to my doll. Um...ok, this is new...
Then I'm asked to read from the sides, the cold read. I do it, (I'm honestly a bit rusty with the old english, so I'm not surprised when she gives me an adjustment.)
I do it again.
Then they ask me for my musical piece. I sing "Castle on a Cloud", from the musical Les Miserables. This happens to be a song I know and learned in music class when I was 12 years old. Maybe it's the acoustics in the room, but I think I sound pretty good.
Then they teach me another song and I have to sing it on the spot. So I guess this is a cold song?
I do it. They thank me for coming in and say that they will be making a decision soon.
Musical Audition #2 - FAME!
This is serious. I can tell because when I walk into the waiting room to check in there are dancers doing warm ups. They have numbers pinned to their chest. I'm assigned #18 and asked to pin it to my shirt. First I'll be going into the singing and acting portion of the audition and then the dance part.
I'm ushered into the audition room. There are a panel of four people sitting up top of a stage. So they are on the stage and I have to audition in front of the theatre seats. So I'm looking up at them and them down at me...
I hand the pianist my sheet music and ask him to give me an "A". I sing my song, I even lose my tone at one point, but hey this type of audition is new to me so I'm going to make the best of it! I finish. They ask me to perform my monologue, I do. They they tell me to go the the studio area and wait for the dance audition.
So here I am, I'm an amateur dancer at best and there are guys and girls doing splits in the air, twirling like amazing ballerina's. Girls and guys laughing about how the last time they auditioned for disney as dancers there was some weird height requirement.
The chorographer comes in and calls all of us up to our feet. She begins teaching us steps to a dance routine. I'm a bit lost. It's ok, because I chalk this up to a learning opportunity. Then this guy, who isn't picking up the steps either, walks over to me and whispers into my ear, "You are an actor, right? Me too...you can tell who the dancers are..."
Thanks Dude, really encouraging.
Then they break us up into groups of four, because they want to see us dance individually. Um...I still suck as a dancer. Doesn't matter who you put around me, I feel like a pop star that sits there and does basic moves while everyone else if bustin' a move.
So I make the best of it, I dance the way I want to dance, I kick my leg up as high as I can and at the end of it all I strike a pose. Because baby, I can't believe I just put myself through this.
It's done, I'm done...I walk out of that audition studio and I laugh all the way home.
What I Learned
