Busy, Busy, Busy...
A lot has happened in one week...
1. I met with my writing partner to discuss our script. We've put an outline together and we are semi-ready to write everything all down.
2. I met with the webseries producers to put some clarity around the series, confirm shoot dates etc. Really excited about the project. Episodes 1 and 2 have been shot and edited and we are really looking forward to getting everyone together for another shoot.
3. I enrolled into a voice class. Let's talk about that one a bit more.
Voice class for actors isn't singing. When I first started acting I kept hearing a lot about voice work or breathing. Ya, what are you talking about I breath...I breath every day...
For an actor it's not the same thing. There is a lot of preparation that needs to go into breathing in order to tap into your emotions and feelings.
To be honest with you, the last time I took a breathing/voice class, I tapped into too many emotions...
I remember that I really wanted to take a voice class with this well known voice teacher. I had heard really great things about her. I was so excited to be working with her. I remember arriving at her home and she had mats set up on the floor so we could do some voice exercises. If you are not an actor and you are reading this think "meditation", not the same thing but it will give you a bit more insight into what I'm talking about...
We began our voice exercises...I started tapping into some real shit...hurt, pain, anger...and then without being able to control myself I began crying.
Then that session became more of a therapy session. I was telling this lady who I only just met, things that were bothering me, things that I never told anyone before.
I had to leave. I was so embarrassed...so I never went back. I bet that acting teacher still remembers me...poor little girl, sitting on the floor in her living room crying my eyes out...(I'll chalk it up to every actor has a meltdown at one point or another).
Getting back to the subject....Voice also helps centre you and ground you. When you are breathing right into your belly, you get your gut instincts working. Different parts of the body begin to work together. Breath connects to speech. Intention connects to gesture. Gestures flow from one to the other. Automatic habits are replaced by free choice. The result is the kind of poise and grace that radiates from being truly centered.
Round Two. New acting teacher, new start and now I have breathing homework to do...really weird to say that but I do...so every day I'm going to try to commit 20 minutes for myself to just work on my acting breathing techniques. It's an actor thing - trust me...
